It’s not really true to say that his history has been sanitised. The biographies go into copious detail about his weaknesses and mistakes. Many essays are written on his flaws. His friends also criticised him harshly. He was certainly part of the sixties scene that generated gurus, and he has many fans, but it is hardly a cult either. Nor, for that matter, does this issue of the journal deify him. It is a celebration but is not without its criticisms and in previous essays, reviews, and interviews he has been criticised as well. In order to take any writer seriously, you must be prepared to highlight the good and the bad, and at Beatdom we’ve always taken him seriously.
